Euterpdia Brasil

The Euterpdia Brasil website is IMHO is sharp as....Well, Josephine Baker on stage in France in the twenties, killin em. The site has the look and feel as if a master Web Designer/Developer with the transcription skills of a technical writer, programmed it.

Now if this is just the first, Beta version, wow. Everyone should open it up and take a peak. Oh and I did try to 'down load' some of my Brazilian mp3's, right where it says, Adicinar musica. I think that is a music down loader for music from the EB website to the users computer. I don't know, I'm still playing with it.

If your are Portuguese challenged, don't worry, still give it a shot. If I can use the site anyone can, and it will help in your learning process of Portuguese and the beautiful music of Brazil. Nice.

Besouro: The Capoeira Movie

Saw the film today, Besouro, based on the legend of Besouro Mangang of Santo Amaro.

It was what I was hoping against, but in some ways even worse. The soundtrack had NOTHING local to the area, an ironic lapse given that this area is the cradle of Brazil's national music (samba), and a deep rich musical cauldron.

Man, but they had those trippin' power chords going though!

Bad script, boring storyline...

It LOOKED great though! Taking photographic stills out of it would yield some very impressive images! Too bad it wasn't conceived as a photographic exhibit!

Milton Nascimento to start touring in the US

Milton Nascimento to start touring in the US in November. For some reason that info is not on his official website but only on sites that sell tickets in English. Here's a site from ticket master that can give you some info.

Latin night at the White House

Recently in the US, President Obama had a Latin night at the white house. But what was so glaringly absent was not only the music of Brazil, but the entire South American continent had no representatives of any of the countries music in that region of the world.

Don't get me wrong, I love the music of Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Machito...You know, that Afro Cubano thang. Or the more correct, Afro Caribbean style of music. So to leave out an entire continent???
That was a damn shame.

Can we share music on this forum?

Hi,
I would like to share with you the magic of Celso Machado, the guy I have seen in concert last Saturday. Any way of publishing a MP3 file? In the meantime, here is a youtube clip. Sound and camera are bad but you can get a glimpse at his genius. There are other clips from him too. There is a lot of Baden Powell and more so Egberto Gismonti in him (Danas das Cebezas). He plays with his mouth, fingers, parts of his body, mikes and mike stands + all the myriad of small Brazilian jungle instruments. A kind of Brazilian Bobby McFerrin. He has a classical training and plays also beautifully music from Peru or Afrika, with native instruments.
BTW, Os Mutantes was in Montreal last week!

Bear with me on this one, please!

This month in Atlanta, GA at the Variety Playhouse in Little Five Points we finally had a Brazilian band of some renown in our city. The band was Os Mutantes. Now I know, I know that Os Mutantes is the Brazilian musical equivalent of The Association, The Mamas and the Papas with a little Sly thrown in, but hey! It's a start!

Humph....I have been in the states toooo long. I will be glad when January gets here so I can finally go back to Salvador Bahia.

Bambas

Damn, those Bambas were clean, (impeccably dressed).

Ismael Silva, almost reminds me of the Muslim brothers in the states with the bow ties, white shirt, pressed jacket, and hair combed to the side.

Bide, pressed pinstriped suit, starched high neck shirt, beautiful tie, jazz musician like go-tee, close cut, and hat cocked ever so slightly ace deuce, (ratio of 1/2).

And Orlando Silva, sharp ass white suit, his hair laid, with a process or conk.
Fried, (dyed), and laid to the side, with a finger roll at that. Now that's a permanent, or in Portuguese, permanente. Definitely reminds me of Cab Calloway.

Even Pixinguinha and his band remind me of one of Satchmo's (Louis Armstrong) bands.
Choro

I am learning a little more and more about Brasilian music and I had no idea what choro was/is or that it is such a very old form of Brasilian music. Joaquim_Antonio_(Callado)_da_Silva, was an earlier composer of choro who died in 1880.
Ragtime as history records did not start until the 1870's, so it's not to much of a stretch to think that choro was around before ragtime, or at least they had similar time lines.

Seresta Carioca - A Brief History of Choro by Ellen Collison http://www.dirtynelson.com/linen/92/brazil.html shares some interesting information on the matter of choro.

I had always thought that American music influenced all others simply because the US invented the technology for recording. The player piano and the phonograph. Truth is Edison invented the phonograph to try and help the hearing impaired.

And it was sheer luck that some smuck stumbled upon recording the marches of Sousa simply because the acoustic instruments recorded well on their primitive equipment. Did the music of Brasil, at least in the early days developed on its own? I don't see why not.

The gentleman standing to the right of Pixinguinha is holding a musical instrument that looks like a small Banjo. Does anyone know what the heck that instrument is? Don't tell me those cats weren't ahead of their time.

Note:
The American composer John Phillips Sousa's grandparents on his fathers side were Portuguese.

I know it's a shame, but...

I will be spending two days in Salvador, November 8-9th. I will be on my way to my condo in Joao Pessoa (Paraiba). I'm from Montreal, Canada. Any suggestion for some things not to be missed? I am a music lover and photographer. I was already thinking of going to Bale Folklorico de Bahia, Monday evening. BTW, regarding photography, is it so dangerous to use a camera in Salvador? or is it mainly a urban legend and you have to be careful like anywhere else?
Thanks for your time. Jacques.
Ocean Air

I just bought a one way ticket from Sao Paulo to Salvador and it cost just a little over
R$200.
The company is Ocean Air and I have flown with them before and didn't crash. Because
they are so cheap the seats get sold fast so book early. My flight is the 17th of novembro.
I booked direct from their website it was easy and I paid with american express. Like
most airlines in Brazil they will not except international visa or master card only Brazilian issued
cards. I have American Express for the sole purpose of buying air fare in Brazil.

When I book my flights to Brazil from Canada it's all Air Canada but only up to Sao Paulo then
it's best to book your own flight to connect you with where ever in Brazil you wish to be.
If I booked my Sao Paulo to Salvador connector through Air Canada they would deal with Varig and the same flight to Salvador would cost R$800 - R$1200 or about $500Cn - $700Cn
or more.

Hi. My name is Kenny, and I live in Atlanta. I want to know if anyone here, or if you know of someone who is going to Salvador and/or Recife for carnaval 2010. I've been to Salvador 14 times, 5 times for carnaval, and I speak portuguese. Also, I know Salvador very well, and I know a lot of people there. I'm trying to make plans right now, because from experience waiting until the last minute is a pain in butt. I want to share an apt with someone or a group. The more the merrier. Race, color, religion, or sexual orientation is not a problem. I want to get started now, before all the good apts are taken.
Thanks,
Kenny
compost in Salvador--is it possible?!

I am wondering if anyone has any experience or ideas for composting here. (We're not in the city, so we do have some green space.) I hate to see all of that wonderful fruit and vegetable waste go into the trast.
In the States, we just dug a hole in the backyard and buried it, but here I'm worried about rats and cockroaches and other pests.
Any ideas or experience with this here?
