Quote: Live music: Rio has a wide choice when it comes to live music. Samba, Bossa Nova, rock, MBP (Brazilian pop), classical, blues and jazz can all be enjoyed nightly. An elaborate Carnival-style samba show can be seen at Plataforma 1, Rua Adalberto Ferreira 32, Leblon, daily from 2200. Favourites for Bossa Nova include New Garden, Rua Visconde de Pirajá 631, Ipanema, and Vinicius, Rua Vinicius de Moraes 39, Ipanema, daily from 2300 - in the bar and road named after Vinicius de Moraes of Girl from Ipanema fame, who penned many of his songs here with Tom Jobim. Another Bossa Nova hotspot is Bar do Tom, Thursday to Sunday from 2230 at Rua Adalberto Ferreira 32, Leblon, named after Bossa Nova pioneer Tom Jobim. Esch Café, Rua do Rosario 107, Centro, and Rua Dias Ferreira 78, Leblon, holds regular jazz evenings.
As always, when in Rio, for a stop over before you go to Salvador and you want to go to a live gig to hear some cool bossa or some hot Samba and have a cold one. (And maybe mingle a little bit). Check to see if that particular venue is open and exactly what is happening that night. Peace __________________ Embrace our similarities, celebrate and learn from our differences. Peace |

Reply with quote | #2 | (respectfully) Please post places you have personally been to and enjoyed, with a bit of description as you experienced the place, not quotes from third parties who probably got their info fourth hand. Much more useful. And that way, you may not be promoting tacky, inauthentic Vegas tourist rip-off shows like Platforma, and other such relative wastes of time (in comparison to a samba school lunch/rehearsal or a night at Carioca de Gema or Estudantina). (And my preference would be for places in and topics about Salvador, here. There are so many other forums for all the rest.) |

First of all, this is not, nor are you the the owner of this forum. So your personal attacks on me and my posts are not welcome. Yes I have been to SOME of those places mentioned above (and some places not mentioned that were far worse in RIO). Who the Hell are you to say where and what I can post! The websites I posted in this forum are just for people to view and for THEM to decide if they may want to visit or not, not Bahiana77. Most folks, especially from the US, have a stop over or extended stay in Rio before they come to Salvador. You can sometimes save a nice piece of money if you go to Rio first before you go to Salvador. And some airlines don't go to SSA. And some peolple WANT to visit Rio and Salvador while they are in Brasil. Or have you forgotten this?
The post that I am most proud of is the one where I passed on some timely flight and price information to the MAJOR CITIES of Brasil (and to the US from Brasil), and later I found out (thru grate full emails) that not only did single individuals benefit but ENTIRE FAMILIES BENEFITED. Some folks had not seen their kin in years!
Of course that would not affect you because EVERYONE knows that Bahiana 77 Brasil hops all over Brasil. B77, most the of people on this site don't have the wherewithal to Brasil hop as you do.
It is quite hypocritical for you to visit many places in Brasil then turn around and say they are not worth seeing. Again I say, who the Hell are you? On one of my last post you told how 'touristy' Morro Sao Paulo is, and yet it was OK for you to visit!
A lot of those places have people that make their living and take care of their families by working there and I have MORE RESPECT for them than you or your pom pus comments.
I WILL make posts on this forum WHEN, WHERE, and WHAT I WANT to talk about unless Randy er PARDAL tells me not to. My friends on this website, if you have some help full information to pass on to me about Bahia or ANY other topic pertaining to Brasil please do, unless PARDAL tells you not to, and disregard Bahiana 77 mean spirited comments.
Bahaiana 77, I have seen your disrespectful attitude and comments/posts of people and places in Brasil all over the internet. And frankly my dear, you can shove them all. And I think it's time for you to re-up, on your meds. (respectfully)

Reply with quote | #5 | No need to get so bent out of shape over an internet comment, honey. I also get to express an opinion. Mine are just as valid as yours. If you don't like 'em, you don't have to read 'em. I give the best advice I can, based on my long experience in Brazil trying to find out more about the culture. Vegas shows and scenes where the foreign tourists outnumber the Brazilians aren't what I would recommend to get to know the country, even if I'm taking the food out of the mouths of babes to say so. And while there are lots of forums to get info about any other place in Brazil, this is the one in English that features Salvador. There are a lot of others here whose opinions I highly respect because of their rich knowledge of Salvador and Bahia in general. But they don't seem to feel they have to be pretentious, nor suck up to the site owner. |

Reply with quote | #7 | If I were Solomon I'd say split the baby and douse the fire, or something, but I'm just a guy with a little record shop and web site, and my accumulated life's wisdom could be fit into a cafezinho cup.
I sincerely appreciate the good will and knowledge that both jazztech and Bahiana77 have shared with me and with others via this forum, and I hope they'll continue to do so.
As for the tone of disagreements, while it can be, uh, disagreeable, that in and of itself doesn't mean to me that it's necessarily the worst thing in the world. You should hear me yelling at my kids (sometimes unfairly), or having disagreements with close friends (one last year resulted in my having beer poured on my head)...
Hopefully one of these days we can all sit down together to bater papo and neither one of you will be driven to such drastic action! |

The ironic thing, Pardal, is that were this poster and I to have a conversation about music, given some of his previous posts and my own knowledge and interest, I think we would have a lot to say to each other. But since he only seems interested in having an attitude...... |

B77, I don't have a bad attitude, it's just I have been raised to take up for myself, as most of us have. I actually love reading your posts, they inspire me. But I will not let someone talk down to me, or be little or push me, or to suggest that my contributions are not good enough in anyway, shape or form.
I am an 'old school' kinda guy and this is the only web site I post to, (I don't even post on the i2i website, we just email each other), and it was the first one that I found so comprehensive on aspects of Brasil, when I decided to visit for the first time, study the language, how to comport myself when there and learn about the people and culture.
Not to mention that the owner of this site, (sorry Pardal) has a bunch of gray (white) hair, grew up in my home state and lived not to far down the road from where I grew up. So I kinda felt/feel 'at home here'.
On a positive note, I was just sitting here thinking (dreaming) about my trips to Brasil in '10. Next year thanks to my wonderful son, I will be able to fly anywhere in the world for free and I am going too, Brasil - hop my (I hope no one is offended by my speech here), ass off! You know, two days here, two days there....you get the picture.
If this helps, I will be a gentlemen here, (I also have been raised that way), and offer an olive branch to you and, um grande abraco. (I don't know about the kiss...yet). Peace (be with you and yours) Jazztech aka Ty

This website http://www.ipanema.com/index.htm is an up to date, very cool list of all types of things to do in Rio. Yes some places are for the tourist crowd, but most of these joints are where the Brasilians go to.
So if your ever in Rio on your way to Bahia and you have a jet lag stop over instead of going straight to Bahia, you can definitely find a place of your liking to get a cool drink, dance and hang out with the carioca's. And this site is really good if you're portuguese challenged.
The front page has different portals such as Rio night life and is loaded with places to go and check out that will satisfy anyone's taste. I used this site a couple of years ago when I first went to Rio and when I went back a year later, on my way to Salvador and it has been kept up to date. A friend of mine sent me a website of this club to check out while in Rio, casarosa, and sure enough it was on the list of places to check out and party in the above site. The list of places have the phone numbers, area they are in, their complete addresses and description of the venues.
